- Title:
- An event-semantic approach to the "adversity causative" construction in Japanese
- Abstract:
-
The aim of this study is to give a semantic description to Japanese "adversity causative" construction in the framework of the event-based semantics. Causative sentences generally have a reading, in which the referent of the subject brings about some event that makes another event caused. Only some of these sentences have a deferent reading: the referent of the subject suffers from the caused event, rather than being the cause of it. I explore what allows these sentences to be interpreted as the adversity causative and capture this special interpretation in a combinatory approach of the compositional and event-based semantics.
